Memoir Writing: documenting your life
A memoir is a piece of writing, autobiographical in nature, that is typically of a shorter length than an autobiography. Memoirs are written to expose the best parts of one’s life to the world and usually focus on the best and most dramatic highlights of one’s life. This differs from an autobiography in that it may be more emotionally charged and focus in on certain circumstances of your life instead of documenting your whole life.
Writing basics
Memoir writing has some characteristics that make it stand out from other writings and the act of writing a book. As stated above, when you are writing, the focus of your text should be more on a total series of related events that show the best your life has had to offer. Your writing will be more emotionally charged, and you may be writing it in a style that is true yet reads almost like fiction.
As a writer, you will record these events in your life firsthand but in retrospect, with a narrative setting and a reconstruction of the main events. A memoir focuses more on a specific period of time rather than on your whole life, which would be more commonly characterized as an autobiography.
Writing memoirs—who can do it?
Writing a memoir can be done by many different people. Celebrities may write their own book of memoirs, especially when they have been famous for decades. Memoirs may be written by someone who has survived an emotional past, whether it was a crisis situation, mental, physical or emotional abuse, a survival story or what not.
Many a biography memoir has been written by war survivors, POWs, disaster survivors and other people who have lived through traumatic events. In those cases, when you still feel emotional about the episode, writing can be a therapeutic form of relief. Anyone can write one, even new writers and inexperienced ones. There are many forms of help available through classes, workshops, books and the Internet. Here on Write My Memoirs we offer writing services as well. Please contact us for details.
Why write?
Personal memoirs are crafted by everyday people. Many of us want to leave something behind, something to show that our life had purpose and meaning. It may be easier to write one than you think, and a great idea for many of us. For those who have a large family, your memoir can be quite an interesting read, especially for the next generations of family.
Writing books may seem like a daunting and harrowing task, but the idea of writing one’s memoirs can be a lot more appealing to you than writing a different sort of book. Not only is it fun and informational, but it also may help a generation down the line to understand your life better.
Relive your life through writing
Memoirs may, in fact, be an excellent way to relive your life. However, when reading one, take into consideration that it may be embellished a bit. Many people do not have the best memory to get every detail right, so facts and stories may be less than reliable.
As an emotionally written book, personal memoirs may be full of emotional surprises. However, they can be fun to read, and even more fun to write, as you relive the nooks and crannies of your life. Getting started on one today can be a great way to remember and honor your past.
If you plan to write your memoirs, be prepared for a fun and exciting time reliving the biggest moments of your life. You’ll have a great experience and are sure to produce an enjoyable memoir!
