Memoirs: sharing your life story
Writing your memoirs can become a rewarding experience if you do it right. There are many ways to write a great memoir, even if you think you don’t have the experience to. Let us look at the many points there are when writing for the first time.
Pace Yourself when writing your memoirs
On mistake many people make is that they try to do too much in too short of a time period. Pace yourself, however, and promise yourself that you will work a certain amount of hours per week. Try to set aside a block of time per day, or a couple days per week, to start your rough draft.
Focus on one topic at a time. If you pick one event in your life, and then take days or weeks to write about it, you will be able to go into more detail than if you jump around between events. This way, you won’t just be skimming the surface of your life, and you will remember more details as well. Start out with small assignments and go slow, especially at first. You want to get the feel of the memoir book, and soon your memoirs will be flowing.
Do the proper research
There are two ways to go about research when writing your memoirs. First of all, if you plan on publishing them, you will want to know what appeals to readers. Start by checking out other peoples memoirs. Find a favorite actor, celebrity or singer whom you like and purchase their book. Perhaps someone in your family has written a memoir.
Whoever you choose, pay close attention to how it is written, as this can give you valuable ideas as to how to write your own memoirs. A new writer is wise to do this, or even purchase how to books or a writer guide to learn more.
Find out what your readers want
The second part of doing your research is to figure out what will appeal to your readers the most. A good way to figure this out is to read over your rough drafts. Is a certain part boring to you, even though it’s about you? Then chances are it will bore your readers, as well.
You may find that you have written about events that may have seemed exciting to write down, but really aren’t after you review them. If so, take them out. You’ll have plenty of other memoir ideas to include!
What are you writing for?
One of the easiest ways to write the best memoir about yourself is to think about WHY you want to write this biography memoir. Is this for a personal goal? Do you want to have a memoir for your children, grandchildren and other family members to read? Are you planning on actually publishing it? If it is for more personal reasons, you may find that letting yourself become more emotional with your book writing is ok.
However, if you are writing it for the general public, you may want to try and keep your emotions in check for the duration of your book. Readers who do not know you personally will not be as interested in how you felt, emotion wise, as they are in the facts of the story. Think about this factor before you begin writing, and you will be able to make your memoirs as unique as you choose, while appealing to the right audience that you have targeted.
It can be a rewarding experience to write about your life and times. You will find it an exciting experience, and probably wish you had started on your memoirs a long time ago!
