SHORT STORY ONE
I remember my kid sister Sarah never wanted to get dressed in the morning. She was just a little girl, maybe 4 years old. She’d come out of her bedroom in the morning running around, naked as a jaybird. Mom would run after her, trying to catch her and make her get dressed for the day. One morning, Sarah ran around a big dresser that sat in our upstairs hall and Mom tried to grab her before she started down the stairs. My grandmother, who lived with us, was watching and calling out, “Be careful, be careful!” Mom reached for Sarah as she rounded the banister and headed down stairs, buck naked. Mom hit her hand on the banister and broke her wrist. She was in a cast for two months! To this day, we blame Mom’s arthritis in her wrist on Sarah’s early life as a streaker!
SHORT STORY TWO
My dad tells me that when he was a boy, in the ‘40s, his dad (my grandfather) would take him and his two brothers and sister downtown to the movie theater for the afternoon. Grandpa would drop them off, all by themselves, and leave them for 4 or 5 hours. For 10-cents admission, they’d see a newsreel, a short, a couple of cartoons and the main feature, which was usually a cowboy picture starring Roy Rogers. It was one of the only air conditioned places in town where you could spend a hot afternoon. They’d show up at any old time; they’d never check the newspaper for a starting time – they just showed up knowing they could miss the newsreel and a cartoon, no big deal. They’d still make the main event. They’d often ride the streetcar home. I can’t imagine a parent today who’d let their little kids, 10 and under, go to the movies unattended. And I can’t imagine an afternoon’s entertainment for only 10-cents! Seems like those were the days to be a kid!
