The Power of Photos in Your Memoirs

The Power of Photos in Your Memoirs
We were asked recently how to add a photograph to a WriteMyMemoirs writing page. Great question! Visuals aid the reader’s mental picture of the events that took place and the people who played a role, but they also help you, the author.
As you review the many photos you have around the house, you’ll be reminded of off-your-radar episodes and people you may want to consider for topics in your memoir. Also, the combination of visual elements and text will provide you with the most valuable record of your memories. Even when photographs do not make your “final cut” for inclusion, they can jog your memory. Looking at a picture of your childhood home, for example, will enable you to describe the structure with accuracy and enriching detail.
So how do you add a photo to a WriteMyMemoirs page? On the page in your account, just click on the icon at the far right. That will bring up a selection of stock photos, but it also will provide a button marked “upload” that you can click on to take you into your own computer files. Then you need to find the file in which it’s stored, and you should be able to follow directions from there. If your photo is not in digital form, you will have to scan it first in order to store the digital form on your computer.

New Features on WriteMyMemoirs

We hope you’ve been enjoying the additions to our website. We’ve tried to come up with ways to keep you writing if you get stuck.

You probably have noticed the button, “Don’t know what to write about?” If you click on that, you’ll pull up hints about topics that you might want to include in your memoir. For example, one hint is: “Did you volunteer for charities or other organizations? Did you enjoy that?” That might trigger your memory about being a room mother for your child at school, a coach for your kid’s basketball team or a candy striper when you were younger. Remembering those experiences can lead to interesting anecdotes, so we hope a reminder like that helps to move your life story forward.

Each hint also includes the question, “Was this helpful to you?” You can opt out of answering this, of course, but if you do click on either “yes” or “no” your response becomes part of our database that automatically brings up that particular hint either more frequently or less frequently, depending on whether people have found it helpful.

Through these hints and a few other features we’ll explain in future blogs, we aim to make your experience on WriteMyMemoirs unique. We value all of our members and, when you sign up with us, your goal becomes our goal: we want each of our members to complete a full memoir. Good luck writing!

Have You Tried to “Contact Us”?

Have You Tried to “Contact Us”?
We hope you’ve been enjoying the new features on WriteMyMemoirs. Please make sure to fill out the “interview” questions that provide an outline of the dates and events in your life story. Then as you write, you’ll be able to access hints to tickle your memory about what was going on in the world and in your life during the time period you’re addressing. We’re very proud of these capabilities!
We are still in the process of coordinating our pages and removing outdated material, so please bear with us! During this redesign, we also had a technological glitch that delayed our response to messages coming in through the “Contact Us” forms. We have it worked out now, and if you wrote to us in that manner you should have a reply by now. If not, we invite you to email us directly to:
support@writemymemoirs.com
Your communication is very important to us; we value every single one of our members and thank you for your patience. Please “like” us on Facebook, and feel free to open up a discussion on our Facebook page if you need help with writing concepts or motivation to keep plugging away at your memoir.

New Features on Write My Memoirs

New Features on Write My Memoirs
If you’re a Facebook friend of Write My Memoirs and during this past week you clicked the link to the previous blog post, you received an error message. We apologize! We’re experiencing a few growing pains, and some of the links on the blog posts themselves are temporarily coming up empty, too. But the reason for that is very exciting! Those links lead to pages that have been replaced, as we’ve now launched our new and improved writemymemoirs.com!
You’ll notice that the top left button, Sign Up and Join Today, now links to an interview page. Optionally, you can answer questions, and your confidential responses become part of your private account to create a timeline indicating the important events and dates of your life. As you’re writing, if you get a little stuck, you can consult the timeline and also ask your account for “hints” to remind you of anything that took place that year.
We’ve also automated our historical section. Instead of flipping through lots of web pages that list historical events by year, you can just click on the little tabs at the bottom of your writing window to read short synopses about developments in inventions, world events, fashion, pop culture and sports. These headlines within our collective lifetime may trigger memories in your personal life that you’ll want to include in your autobiography. Please let us know your thoughts about these changes! And friend us on Facebook—we can talk there, too!

This is the 100th Write My Memoirs Blog!

This is the 100th Write My Memoirs Blog!
As I sat down to blog today, as I do every Tuesday, I noticed that this is a milestone—number 100! As you reflect on your life in order to write your memoirs, maybe it’s time for us to reflect on the journey that we continue to take here at WriteMyMemoirs.com.
We use the blog to alert you to changes within the website, bring to your attention interesting memoirs by celebrities and others, link you to pertinent websites, provide grammar and writing tips and motivate you to start writing and stick with it! We blogged about a book that traced the history of the memoir writing tradition. We suggested you use your own annual holiday letters to build the foundation for your memoir. We followed up our discussion of the six-word memoir fad with an offer to help you publish a short book—not limited to six words, but up to 20 pages. And we urged you not to put off writing your story, because you can never be sure that your health, availability and resources will remain in place.
We appreciate all of you who read the blog, find us on Google, sign up and email us with your questions and comments. Currently we are planning changes to the website that we hope will make it easier than ever to be here, and we’re expanding our publishing options and writing help so that your memoir turns out exactly how you dream it will.

So You Think You Can Publish Your Book!

So You Think You Can Publish Your Book!
Memoir writers often email us to ask how to go the “traditional??? route in getting their book published. This is what we tell them:
Many writers hope that a traditional publisher will pick up their memoirs for publication. The major advantage in going that route is that the publisher will do all of the distribution and promotion. You could be sent on a national book tour, and the publisher can easily get your book into bookstores and libraries. You might even be offered an advance—a sum of money before you’ve finished your work that gives you the freedom to take the time to write your memoir. And if the publisher is interested in your story but you cannot write it yourself, you could be assigned a professional writer to work with you. The other advantage is that once you’ve been published by a traditional publisher, it’s easier to get a second book picked up similarly.
The downside of publishing with a traditional publisher is that after the expense of the promotion, distribution and the publisher’s profit, there’s not that much left for you. Your share of the royalties from sales of the book is usually pretty low, so unless your book becomes a best-seller you will not earn much money in the long run.
But all of that is typically beside the point for an unknown first-time author, because it’s nearly impossible to make the traditional route happen. First you need to find an agent who believes in your book enough to represent you and pitch it to publishers. Just getting an agent is very difficult. Your writing must be of professional quality, your story must be unique and compelling and sometimes you need an introduction to get an agent to read it in the first place. If your story is newsworthy and you’ve been covered by the national press, or even your local press, the publisher may come to you with an offer to publish your book. If not, it’s unlikely that you will be able to get a traditional publisher to publish it.
Self-publishing is so affordable and quick. I believe that today the easier method is to self-publish, establish a website to promote your book, take it around to some bookstores, and then if your book sells pretty well a publisher may take notice of it and offer to publish a second edition to really get it out there. At Write My Memoirs, we do not have any contacts with agents or publishers. But we can help you to self-publish. Please let us know if you decide to self-publish, and we’ll get started on it.

Memoirs Lite? New Option Lets You Publish a Shorter Book

Memoirs Lite? New Option Lets You Publish a Shorter Book
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Great geniuses have the shortest biographies.??? Whether you consider yourself a genius or not, if you can put your life story into 20 pages you’ll like our latest option here at Write My Memoirs—a special price of only $4.95 per book to publish your short book. Our books are 5.5 inches by 8.5 inches, which fits about 300-325 words per page.
A short-book idea might appeal for a variety of purposes. For one thing, while a biography typically ends with the subject’s death, an autobiography can feel as if you’re never quite finished. There is always a new adventure on your horizon, so you might want to publish a series of small books to have something tangible even as you continue to follow your life into your later years. Or maybe your youth, military service, career or retirement warrants its own title and volume. Perhaps there’s one particularly compelling or well-written story from your life you would like to have stand alone—perhaps for wider distribution. Even if you include it as a chapter in your memoir, you might also want to try to sell it separately on a website or through bookstores, or use it as a present for your grandchildren.
We also are happy to help you publish any book—even if it is not a memoir. For example, a book of poetry may be only 20 pages. Please visit our publishing page for details.

Reading Memoirs? Speed Reading Classes Couldn’t Hurt!

Reading Memoirs? Speed Reading Classes Couldn’t Hurt!
If you follow us on Twitter (twitter.com), you’ll see that today we suggest taking a speed reading course to help you zip through all of those memoirs you’re reading as you write your own. A lot of people think speed reading is a bunch of “malarky,??? as we used to say.
Full disclaimer: I used to teach speed reading with the company I recommend, Iris Reading (irisreading.com). I’m not currently associated with the firm, but I learned a lot by going through the training and watching how the course improved people’s reading habits. I now do read faster than I did before I became involved with it. Everyone can speed up a little or temporarily, and if you continue to practice the methods you can permanently cut your reading time significantly.
The key is to silence the little voice in your head as you read. You still see every word, but instead of hearing each word you have to let your brain recognize the words almost as you would recognize a face. Sometimes it’s fun to read slowly and really savor a book—I hope people do that with your autobiography when you complete it! But, typically, we read in order to gather information as quickly as possible. Don’t fall for any company’s claim that you can learn to read 10,000 words per minute. Iris sets realistic goals and holds affordable classes all over the country. Can’t hurt to try!

A Common Question at Write My Memoirs

A Common Question at Write My Memoirs
All Write My Memoirs members should have received an email recently that lists some of the newer services we’ve added. If you need help writing your memoirs or if you’ve finished writing and you would like to publish your book, we now have both writing and publishing services available.
Our email prompted some members to write back to us, with one question consistently dominating our mailbox: “Why is this site free???? Perhaps people feel that there must be some catch. Why would we permit everyone and anyone to write a memoir on our site and use our own resources to keep it safe here, online, so that the writer can return to it day or night, month after month, no matter how long it takes to complete?
We answer every legitimate email we receive. In response to those who ask that question, we explain that the founder of Write My Memoirs was looking for a website to help him write his own life story. Not satisfied with the meager efforts available at the time, he launched writemymemoirs.com to help others who had the same goal in mind. So there’s no catch! Our new writing help and publishing services, which are fee-based, help us to maintain the rest of the site so that there’s never a charge to join, write a memoir and keep it online at Write My Memoirs.
